George E. “Smitty” Smith, 94, of Cumberland, died Friday, December 22, 2017 at Devlin Manor Nursing & Rehab Center.

Born March 26, 1923 in Centreville, PA, he was the son of the late Mearle A. Smith and Nellie Mae (Wortz) Smith.

He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Virginia “Ginny” Smith; one brother, Melvin Smith; and two sisters, Ruth Morgrat and Bertha Nunamaker.

He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Smith was a Purple Heart recipient and earned three Battle Stars.

Smitty was an electrician, having first worked for Potomac Edison. For over thirty years, he was employed by Sterling Electric Co.

Mr. Smith was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, where he belonged to the Fellowship Class and Men’s Group. He was a 60 year member of Queen City Lodge #131, A.F. & A.M.; 33rd. degree, Cumberland Scottish Rite Bodies; Ali Ghan Shrine, where he belonged to the Ritualistic Unit; and, was a DeMolay Dad for Cumberland Chapter of DeMolay.

Survivors include his daughter, Janis Loy and husband Mike, Short Gap; two grandchildren, Andrea Kraft and husband Will, and Ian Loy; the light of his life, great-granddaughter Nora; sister-in-law, Emily Smith; brother-in-law, Irvin “Butch” Johnson; three nephews, Gary Smith and wife Mary Ann, Dr. Ronald Smith and wife Susan, and Kevin Smith and wife Shari; many special great nieces and nephews; and, dear friends, Cheryl Atkinson and Terry and T.J. Himmler.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 5-8 PM.

Queen City Lodge #131, A.F. & A.M. will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Wednesday at 6:30 PM. Following the service at 6:30, a memorial service will be conducted by IBEW, Local 307.

The funeral service will be held on Thursday at noon in St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, with Pastor David Wright, officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, where military honors will be accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.

Serving as pallbearers will be grandson, Ian Loy, and great-nephews, Justin, Kristian, Jeremy, Adam, and Jordan Daniel Smith.
