Obituary for George P. Spiroff

George P. Spiroff, 86, of Fort Ashby, West Virginia, passed away March 21, 2018 surrounded by his family.

Formerly of Morgantown, WV he was the son of the late Michael T. and Julia (Sulick) Spiroff. He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Leo, Daniel, Paul, Nicholas, James, and David; and, two sisters, Polly Martin and Veronica Mealy.

He is survived by his wife Carol, children Susan Hoag, husband Keenan, Roanoke, VA, their children Kara and Kassie; Michael Spiroff, wife Kristie, Fort Ashby, WV, and children Eric and wife Jennifer, Ashley, Kala, and Jacob and wife Savannah; Mark Spiroff, wife Carol, Morgantown, WV, their son Joshua; and, Lisa Chaney husband Steve, Cumberland, MD and children, Morgan, Jocelyn, and Jordan; brother Victor Spiroff, San Antonio TX, 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

George was loved by many and liked by all. He always came with a smile and a joke on hand. He enjoyed spending his Fall weekends with his family cheering on the West Virginia Mountaineers. The wisdom and values he passed on to his children and grandchildren will forever be cherished.

George attended St. Francis High School, Morgantown, WV, and West Virginia University.

He was a veteran of the Korean War while serving in the US Navy. He completed four years of Sea Duty and served on the USS Burdo.

He was retired from the West Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind, as Director of Special Services, Safety Officer, and Director of Transportation. He worked as a Budget Analyst in the Department of Finance and Administration at the State Capital in Charleston, WV prior to coming to Fort Ashby.

He was a member of Annunciation of Our Lord Catholic Church; Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge #1341 and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1101, Romney, WV.

He was also responsible for starting the Fort Ashby Pee Wee Baseball League. After the original team was selected, the remainder of the boys didn’t have any team on which to play. So a Pee Wee League was formed by George and his wife Carol.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc., Fort Ashby, Sunday, March 25, 2018 from 5-8 PM.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 AM in Annunciation of Our Lord Catholic Church, with Rev. James Watson, OFM, Cap, as celebrant.

Military honors will be accorded by accorded by Ft. Cumberland Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.

As per his request, George will be cremated after the funeral mass.
