Obituary for Janice Mason

Fort Ashby, WV-

Janice Rae (Sturm) Mason, 88, of Fort Ashby, WV, died Thursday, February 15, 2018 at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born February 26, 1929 in Enterprise, WV, she was the daughter of the late Glen and Minta Sturm.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph William “Bill” Mason, and a sister, Eleanor (Sturm) Myers.

A 1952 graduate of West Virginia University, Janice began her teaching career in Elk Garden, WV, where she met her husband, Bill. After moving to Fort Ashby, Janice became the West Virginia history teacher producing 41 Golden Horseshoe winners. She retired in 1987. Well into her 80’s, Janice remembered her students and enjoyed hearing from them.

She was a charter member of the Fort Ashby Lioness Club and the last surviving charter member of Alpha Delta Kappa sorority. Janice was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

She leaves behind her sons, Bill (wife Christine) of McHenry, and Barry (wife Susan) of Ridgeley; daughter Mary Christman (husband Todd) of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren, Derek (wife Megan), Tony and Sean Ruch, Philip, Andy, Owen, Kendal, and Elijah Mason, along with Diana (Mason) Webb (husband Addison) and Beth (Mason) Cosner (husband Matt); great grandchildren, Paisley Mason, Macy Cosner, and Jacquelyn Webb.

Janice had donated her body to the West Virginia Human Gift Registry for medical research and education.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 11 AM in Trinity United Methodist Church, with Rev. Sara Lamb, officiating.
