Obituary for Joseph Carrol Kessler

Cumberland, MD-

Joseph Carrol Kessler, 87, of Cumberland, died Friday, March 16, 2018 at his residence.

Born May 18, 1930 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Bernard Leo Kessler, and Mary Leota (Pollack) Kessler.

He was also preceded in death by his children, Valarie Myers, and Karlyn Buser; and his brothers, Bernard Kessler and Richard Kesler.

Joe attended LaSalle High School, and later graduated from Allegany High School. He had also attended Frostburg State College.

Mr. Kessler served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

He retired as a clerk from the Chessie Railroad System.

Joe was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish- St. Patrick’s Church where he was an active member and served as an usher.

Mr. Kessler belonged to Trout Unlimited, where he was the most successful president from this area. He was also an avid fly fisherman and outdoorsman.

He was a lover of music, having been a jazz drummer with many local groups.

Joe would go to Roy Rogers every morning to have coffee with all his friends. It was a part of his day that he looked forward to.

He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia E. (Madden) Kessler, Cumberland; children, Joseph B. Kessler and wife Lisa, Cumberland, Joy Woods, Jacksonville, FL, Dane Metz and wife Cathy, Baltimore, and Eric Metz and wife Julie, Mooresville, NC; very special granddaughters, Hannah Kessler, and Jessica (George) Boncaro; many other grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Tony Kesler, Linda Kerns, Susan Goldizen, and Kathie Kesler Corbett; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2-4 PM.

The funeral service will follow in the funeral home at 4 PM.

Inurnment will be in MSVC Rocky Gap on Friday at 2 PM, where military honors will be conducted by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.

The family would like to extend a special thank you for the excellent care provided from the staff at the Schwab Family Cancer Center, and to the hospice nurses and home care from the Western Maryland Health System.
