Obituary for Owen Junior Rice

Cumberland, MD-

Owen Junior “OJ” “Junie” Rice, 90, of Cumberland, passed away at home on April 11, 2018.

Born October 9, 1927 in Flintstone, he was the son of the late Owen Francis Rice and Nola Marie (Vance) Rice Elliott.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Winona “Nonie” Rice, and his sister, Louise Lavelle.

Owen had served in the Army Air Corps during WWII.

He was retired from the U.S. Post Office.

He belonged to Cornerstone Baptist Church.

He had served on the Board of Directors for Al-Gar Credit Union and on their auditing committee. OJ had over 6000 hours of service as a volunteer at Sacred Heart Hospital. He was involved with the Meals on Wheels program and installed Life Lines Medical Alert Systems in many homes.

In 2006, OJ and Nonie were voted “Most Beautiful People in Allegany County. "

Survivors include his brother, Lester Rice, along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was blessed with his “adopted daughter,” Margie Resseger; “grandchildren,” Jimmy Mead and wife Golaleh, Brian Resseger, and Peytyn Resseger; and, “great granddaughter,” Nina Mead. OJ also had several very special friends.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM.

The funeral service will be held at Cornerstone Baptist Church on Saturday at 11 AM, with Pastor David Hattenfield, officiating.

Interment will be in Zion Memorial Park.
