Obituary for Richard "Ricky" A. Root, Jr.

Carpendale, WV-
On April 23, 2018, family members, friends and loved ones experienced a great loss as Richard “Ricky” Arlen Root, Jr. died unexpectedly. Ricky, who struggled with epileptic seizures, was 33 years old and a lifelong resident of Carpendale, WV.

Born January 1, 1985 in Cumberland, he is the son of Jeaneine Lee (Justice) Clay and Richard A. Root, Sr. and wife Valerie.

Like his father, musician, Rick Root, Senior, Ricky was an avid lover of all kinds of music, but he especially enjoyed “electronic music.” Ricky was the garden center manager at Nature’s Art, and his contributions will be missed as Ricky was gifted in transforming quaint yards and rock gardens into beautiful and well thought out landscapes. Ricky also played hockey during his high school years and loved to go to hockey games with his family. He recently attended a hockey game with his mother, sister and special friends, Larry and Ray VanMeter; this very special memory will be sealed forever as a day to remember.

Ricky was a 2003 graduate of Bishop Walsh High School. In 2012, he became certified in Phlebotomy and EKG testing.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving sister and best friend, Trisha Root and her special friend, Tyler; his maternal grandmother, whom he cared for and had a close relationship, Patricia Justice; and, loving aunt and former baby-sitter, Carrie Jo Goldsworthy. Ricky was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, George “Ed” Justice. On his father’s side, he is survived by two adoring grandparents, Bill and Wanda Root; loving aunts and their husbands include Regina Brelsford and Terry, and Diane Aman and Steve; uncles and their wives include Billy Root and Susie, and Brian Root and Tracy. In addition to these loved ones, there are many dear cousins who share a strong sense of heritage and history with Ricky. Some of these unforgettable memories are fishing the West Virginia creeks and streams as young adventurous boys, attending martial arts classes together, and playing baseball and other sports on a field by Ricky’s childhood home. He had many friends who embraced his passion for music and art and they spent hours with him enjoying these worthwhile past times.

Friends and loved ones are invited to visit with the family at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, on Saturday from 11 AM until 1 PM. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 1 PM, with Pastor Richard W. Shives, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene Street, Cumberland, MD 21502.
