Roberta Lee “Bert” Barb, 82, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Born on March 29, 1935 in Bergoo, Webster County, WV, she was the daughter of the late Robert O. Nelson and Mary Agnes (McCullom) Nelson.

She was also preceded in death by her adopted parents, William E. Beal and Nola (Nelson) Beal; a sister, Mildred Verbal; and special niece Penny Humbertson.

After the death of her mother at age 5, her father moved to Cumberland with her and her 3 siblings to seek help raising the children. After the death of her father at age 10, she and her 5 year old sister were adopted by the Beal family and her sister and brother by the Verbal family in Chaneysville, PA.

Bert was educated in Allegany County public schools and graduated from Allegany High School in 1954.

Bert was a people person which led to her employment in the retail field. Many folks may remember her from Aber’s Hallmark Store. Bert never met a stranger.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School for over 20 years.

She is survived by her husband Ronald Barb, whom she married on April 24, 1957; her brother, Robert Verbal, and wife Sherry, Everett, PA; a sister, Mary Agnes Fretwell, Bowling Green; two nephews, Bob Humbertson (whom she reared), and wife Cathy, and Mike Humbertson, and wife Lahrisa; great-nephew, Bobby Humbertson, and daughter Roky; great-nieces, Danielle Hardman, husband Bucky, and daughter Callie; and Abrah, husband Kevin, and sons Abel and Axel.

The Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, is in charge of the private arrangements. There will not be a public visitation or funeral service.
