Obituary for Thelma June Clayton

Fort Ashby, WV-

Thelma June (Wagoner) Clayton, of Fort Ashby, died Friday, June 8, 2018 at home.

Born June 26, 1928 in Fort Ashby, she was the daughter of the late John Humbird and Alice Florine (Adams) Wagoner.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Willis Eugene Clayton; a daughter, Robin Lynne Hughes; and siblings, John H. Wagoner, Jr., Ray Wagoner, Kenneth Wagoner, Leroy Wagoner, and Norma May Wagoner.

Thelma graduated from Fort Ashby High School in 1947. After marrying her high school sweetheart in 1948, Thelma stayed home to care for her children. After her husband’s unexpected death in 1986, Thelma went to work at the Bon-Ton to provide for her family. Thelma was loved by her
co-workers and customers for her infectious laugh and outgoing personality. She retired in 2014 after 28 years of service, at the age of 86, making her one of their oldest employees.

Thelma was a faithful member of Annunciation of Our Lord Catholic Church in Fort Ashby.

Thelma loved spending time with her family and cheering for her grandchildren in their sports and activities. She was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying WVU basketball, football, and LeBron James.

Survivors include her children, Michele Renee Martz and husband Doug, Fort Ashby, Mark Eugene Clayton and wife Fay, Fort Ashby, and Mary Ann Grose and husband Myrle, Ridgeley; a son-in-law, Joseph Hughes, Ridgeley; grandchildren, Brent O. Hughes and wife Marcia, Brett E. Hughes and wife Janet, Dustin S. Martz and wife Meghan, Destinee S. Martz, Darian S. Martz, Nicholas J. Smith, Garrett M. Grose, Kayla N. Grose, and Bethany F. Clayton; and, several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Alice M. Neff, and Betty Lou Meadows, both of Fort Ashby. She was also preceded in death by her faithful companion, Bubby.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the special caregivers that treated mom as family. We will be forever grateful.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Inc., Fort Ashby, on Monday from 2-4 and 6-9 PM.

A Christian Wake Service will be conducted in the funeral home on Monday at 8 PM.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Annunciation of Our Lord Catholic Church on Tuesday at 11 AM, with Fr. Michael Lecias, as celebrant. The family will receive friends at the church an hour prior to the funeral mass.

Interment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery.
