Obituary for Thomas W. Burton

Thomas Winfield Burton, 86, of Frostburg, died on Thursday, May 24, 2018 at his son’s home.

Born March 9, 1932 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Winfield and Hazel (Sharpes) Burton.

He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Rita Burton; one brother, Frank Burton; three sisters, Ruth Hazel Richards, Louise Karlowa, and Doris Henry; and, two nephews, Steven David Henry and Robert Karlowa.

Mr. Burton was a graduate of Allegany High School. He had attended the University of Maryland, studying business administration.

Tom was a prominent area businessman and land developer. Along with his brother Rex, he operated Burton's Mensware Inc. for more than four decades. Serving Western Maryland and Northern Virginia, Burton's grew to a chain of six stores. He also was a key player in the Sunset View Real Estate and Development Company, where he helped to create the Burton's Shopping Center in LaVale and the Sunset View neighborhood on Haystack Mountain. Working independently Tom built the Burton Mobile Home Park in Eckhart in the sixties, performing much of the construction work himself, and operated it successfully until selling the business in 2011. Tom served on the Allegany County Planning and Zoning Commission for several years and retained a keen interest in the business and economic development of the county during his retirement. He contributed actively to many local charities.

Tom worked hard to support his family and provided them with the benefit of his wisdom and advice throughout his life. Despite his many commitments, Tom always took time to enjoy social moments with his grandchildren, from swimming lessons, to sharing stories, to rides in his antique cars. His avid interest in antique cars led to an active membership in the Queen City Antique Automobile Club of America.

His survivors include his two children, Melanie Pratt and husband Bill, and Brian Burton and wife Janice; five grandchildren, Adam Pratt, Lucas Pratt, Alexander Burton, Angela Burton, and Audrey Burton; two great granddaughters; two brothers, Robert Burton and wife Donna, and Rex Burton and wife Sandy; several nieces and nephews; and, his companion and special friend, Aggie Michael.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene Street, Cumberland, on Sunday, May 27, 2018 from noon until 2:00 PM.

The funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM, with Rev. Stephen F. Yelovich, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, 200 SE 1st. Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131.
